Knitted Art Inspired by Iconic Cities
The Cityscape Blankets by Zuzunaga are a luxurious celebration of urban landscapes and digital art, meticulously crafted in Spain. Each blanket is made from over 2kg of extra-fine, luxurious Italian Merino wool, offering unmatched softness, warmth, and durability. Knitted using a Jacquard technique, these blankets feature a three-colour base with contrasting hand-stitched edges, creating a bold and modern look.
Inspired by iconic cities such as New York, Tokyo, Barcelona, and Shanghai, each blanket takes its starting point from a photograph captured from an emblematic vantage point in each city. For instance, the design for the Shanghai blanket originates from a photograph taken at the Jin Mao Tower, one of the city’s most significant architectural landmarks. Zooming in on these images reveals the intricate ‘pixels’ or basic points of colour, which form the basis of each unique pattern.
Dominated by vibrant reds to pay homage to China, the Shanghai blanket is combined with daring hues like ochre and blue, capturing the youthful and bold energy of this ever-evolving metropolis. This fusion of colours reflects the dynamic, growing personality of the city itself. Each cityscape design evokes the essence of the location it represents, both through its colour palette and the structural patterns of its weave.
The blankets’ unique two-sided design offers versatility and visual intrigue. From a distance, the blankets present a striking graphic aesthetic, while up close, they reveal intricate details. A retro-inspired reverse side, with differing patterns and textures, adds an extra dimension to these pieces, making them as visually complex as the cities they portray.
Zuzunaga’s Cityscape Blankets reflect a deep fascination with architecture, technology, and the challenge of bridging the analogue and digital worlds. Each piece symbolises a bird’s-eye view of a cityscape, transformed into a tangible, one-of-a-kind textile product. The rich, layered colours and textures embody the idiosyncrasies and vibrant life of each city, offering a unique way to experience them.
Whether evoking the intensity of Tokyo’s streets through its passionate pinks or capturing New York’s seasonal moods with its contrasting reds and blues, each blanket tells a story. The inspiration behind Barcelona’s blankets, for instance, comes from a photograph taken at Mount Tibidabo, capturing the city’s greenery and the spirit of Catalonia. Each choice of dominant colour is rooted in the city’s atmosphere, culture, and visual landscape.
More than just blankets, these pieces are works of art, combining luxury, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to urban life.
