Steel developed in 2008 from an early exploration of how a two-dimensional image could move beyond the printed surface and inhabit an existing object.
A Steel armchair, designed by Enrico Franzolini for Moroso, became the structure for a bespoke version of the Arena textile. The image was mapped across the individual upholstered surfaces, allowing fragments of the composition to wrap, meet and shift around the three-dimensional form.
Rather than treating the textile as fabric by the metre, it was conceived specifically in relation to the chair. An industrially produced object became singular through image, colour and placement.
