Rhythm Series began in 2004, when letterpress became central to my practice and I made a deliberate decision to work with the square as a fundamental unit.

Through repetition, rotation, overlap and reduction, simple forms generate rhythm, density, movement and interval. Some works accumulate into complex grids and moiré; others reduce the same enquiry towards division, displacement and near-emptiness. In each case, meaning emerges through the relation between units and the space around them.

The series marked an early recognition that the digital was not necessarily separate from the analogue. Units, sequences and the construction of complexity from simple elements were already present within the physical process of printing and within optical perception. The analogue revealed a digital condition that, in a sense, had always been there.
