The Making of the Cube originates in a longstanding fascination with minerals and, in particular, the apparently perfect cubic structures found in nature. How does nature produce a cube?

In 2017, this inquiry moved into physical matter through a collaboration with sculptor Andrea Zucchini. Four identical cubes, each measuring 8 × 8 × 8 cm, were cast in bronze, iron, lead and aluminium — materials with radically different densities, weights, textures and surfaces.

Four cubes were cast in each material. Although their dimensions and material are repeated, no two are identical. Some were cut back to the cubic form and left raw, while others were polished to varying degrees. The casting process itself introduces another condition: excess material, imperfections, traces and chance occurrences remain visible within an apparently perfect geometric form.
