Developed between 2008 and 2009, Pixel Cushions explored how emerging digital printing technologies could introduce individuality into industrial production. Rather than using technology to reproduce identical objects, the aim was to create a system in which every object could remain unique.
Large pixel compositions were printed in long repeats across rolls of fabric. During production, the cut panels were rotated before being stitched together, continually altering the relationship between front, back and sides. The process could be repeated mechanically, while the resulting combinations remained different.
Thousands were produced and sold, yet no two cushions were identical. Colour, identity and difference became embedded within the logic of production itself.
From 2010, Kvadrat produced and distributed Spirit, Fire and Soul. The collection later expanded through Zuzunaga with Luna, Mercury and Venus.
