Photographs taken in Shanghai in 2006 while researching my RCA dissertation document a city undergoing accelerated physical, cultural and technological transformation.

Architecture, infrastructure, advertising, human movement and dense networks of information overlap continuously. Repeated windows, cables, illuminated façades and rapidly changing skylines turn the city into a field of structures, rhythms and contradictions.

Shanghai became an early point of departure for my investigation into the grid, repetition, systems and information. Within this environment, the pixel began to emerge as a way of understanding how complexity could be broken down, reorganised and reconstructed.
